Next time you find yourself on the southern end of the Queensland border, forgo the golden sands and the world-famous beach breaks that typically entice travellers to the Gold Coast. Instead make the most of the luscious foliage out back in the picturesque Gold Coast Hinterland. Just an hour inland lies this playground of experiences, diverse enough to entertain every type of traveller. Picture a place overflowing with ancient national parks, vineyards, farmers markets, and adventures aplenty. Whether action or romance is calling, here lies a slew of things to do in the Gold Coast Hinterland.
Tamborine National Park
Tamborine is a national park in the Gold Coast hinterland and is a part of the Scenic Rim Regional Council of South East Queensland, Australia, 45 km (28 mi) south of Brisbane. It covers 11.60 km² on the plateau of Tamborine Mountain and around its foothills. The plateau is 8 km (5.0 mi) long, 5 km (3.1 mi) wide and rises to an altitude of 525 m (1,722 ft). The elevation of the plateau keeps the temperature down a little in summer although December to April is also the wettest time to visit. Winter is drier but also cooler.
The protected area is scattered across 14 separate reserves[1] which make up the National Park, interspersed with villages. There are a number of picnic areas as well as scenic drives and many bushwalks to lookouts, gorges, cliffs, waterfalls, rainforest areas, wet eucalypt forest, open forest and woodlands.
Springbrook National Park
Springbrook is a protected national park that is located in the Gold Coast hinterland of Queensland, Australia. The 6,197-hectare (15,310-acre) park is situated on the McPherson Range, near Springbrook, approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) south of Brisbane. The park is part of the Shield Volcano Group of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia.
In December 1994, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially extended the area now known as the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area over the Scenic Rim (including Main Range, Mount Barney, Lamington and Springbrook National Parks and Goomburra Forest Reserve) and the rainforests of northern New South Wales. In 2007 the areas of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia were added to the Australian National Heritage List.[1] The park is part of the Scenic Rim Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance in the conservation of several species of threatened birds.
